From Ruby Myers to Sulochana:
Jewish Actresses and Indian Cinema in the 1920s and 1930s
In the broader context of Jewish actors in Indian cinema of the early twentieth century, this talk introduces Ruby Myers - better known by her screen name Sulochana - in terms of her role in emergent discourses of female stardom in India. As Ruby Myers, her Jewish identity was confused and conflated with Anglo-Indian ethnicity, while as Sulochana, she modeled a flexible cosmopolitan femininity that was easily reconfigured into ideal Indian womanhood in the early 1930s.
