Faculty/StaffDaniel Morgan
He is currently writing a book entitled, "A Feeling of Light: Cinema, Aesthetics, and the Films of Jean-Luc Godard at the End of the Twentieth Century." The book is a study of Godard's late work, in particular the films and videos he has made since the late 1980s. It is also about the place of aesthetics in cinema, and about the persistence of modernism, political radicalism, and 19th century artistic and philosophical concerns into the end of the twentieth century. The book looks the way Godard's films and videos inherit these traditions and, in so doing, transform them in and for the cinema. Morgan is also working on topics around non-fiction film, film and philosophy, and the history and aesthetics of camera movement. His essay on André Bazin, "Rethinking Bazin: Ontology and Realist Aesthetics," was published in Critical Inquiry, and he has also published on Godard and Jean Rouch. He has taught courses on film history and analysis, Godard and aesthetics, film and politics, new media, the Frankfurt School and cinema, contemporary cinema, and theories of realism. Daniel Morgan received his Ph.D. from the Committee on Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago in 2007. His email address is drmorgan@pitt.edu. |
