Film and Media Production Track

Beginning in Spring 2017, students have the opportunity to pursue the Film and Media Production Track within the Film Studies Major.  The Film and Media Production Track combines courses emphasizing historical, theoretical and critical understandings of film and digital media with training in the technical and creative practices of filmmaking to prepare students to participate in multiple modes of audiovisual practices and environments that characterize the digital age. 

The Film and Media Production Track within the Film Studies Major requires 13 courses (39 credits) distributed as follows (students must take the following courses):

I.     Two required Critical Studies courses

o   Film Analysis (ENGFLM 0530) 

o   World Film History (ENGFLM 0540)  

II.     One required foundational course in Production & Criticism:

o   Filmmaking: Production and Criticism (ENGFLM 0590) OR Motion Picture Fundamentals (FILMST 0001)

III.     Five required Film/Media Production courses (check prerequisites for each on the website and with advisors):

o   Digital Studio: Video (SA 1380) OR Video Production 1 (FILMST 0601)

§  Prerequisite: Filmmaking: Production & Criticism (ENGFLM 0590) or Motion Picture Fundamentals (FLMST 0001)

o   Technical Directing (FILMST 1130)

§  Prerequisite: Filmmaking: Production & Criticism (ENGFLM 0590) or Motion Picture Fundamentals (FLMST 0001)

o   Video Production 2 (FILMST 1600)

§  Prerequisite: Digital Studio: Video (SA 1380) or Video Production 1 (FILMST 0601)

o   Screenwriting and the Narrative (ENGWRT 0560 – Writing Intensive Course) OR Introduction to Screenwriting (FILMST 1132) 

o   Writing and Producing the Short Script (FILMST 1134 – Capstone Course)

§  Prerequisites: All previous category III requirements and departmental consent.

IV.     One Technical Elective course from among the following:

o   Digital Cinematography (FILMST 1580)

§  Prerequisite: Digital Studio: Video (SA 1380) or Video Production 1 (FILMST 0601)

o   Script Development (FILMST 1133)

§  Prerequisite: Introduction to Screenwriting (FILMST 1132)

o   Advanced Digital Editing Techniques (FILMST 0420)

§  Prerequisite: Digital Studio: Video (SA 1380) or Video Production 1 (FILMST 0601) or Film Production (FILMST 0500)

o   Lighting for Film and Video (FILMST 1157)

§  Prerequisite: Digital Studio: Video (SA 1380) or Video Production 1 (FILMST 0601) or Film Production 1 (FILMST 0500)

o   Sound for Film and Video (FILMST 1145)

§  Prerequisite: Digital Studio: Video (SA 1380) or Video Production 1 (FILMST 0601) or Film Production 1 (FILMST 0500)

o   Directing Actors (FILMST 1120)

§  Prerequisite: Acting for the Camera (FILMST 1140)

o   Animation

§  Prerequisite: Filmmaking: Production and Criticism (ENGFLM 0590) or Motion Picture Fundamentals (FILMST 0001)

o   Film Production I (FILMST 0601)

§  Prerequisite: Filmmaking: Production & Criticism (ENGFLM 0590) or Motion Picture Fundamentals (FILMST 0001)

o   Digital Effects & Compositing (FILMST 0610)

§  Prerequisite: Digital Studio: Video (SA 1380) or Video Production 1 (FILMST 0601)

V.     Two Topical Elective courses from among the following:

o   Mockumentary Filmmaking: Production and Criticism (ENGFLM 1684)

§  Prerequisite: Filmmaking: Production and Criticism (ENGFLM 0590) Motion Picture Fundamentals (FILMST 0001) or Video Production 1 (FILMST 0601) or Composing Digital Media (ENGCMP 0610) or Introduction to Screenwriting (FILMST 1132)

o   Digital Studio: Animation (SA 1385)

§  Prerequisites: Digital Studio: Imaging (SA 1270)

o   Film Studies Internship (ENGFLM 1930; must obtain departmental approval)

o   Making the Documentary (ENGFLM 1610)

o   Visiting Filmmaker: Feature Film Production (ENGFLM) (must obtain departmental approval)

VI.     Two courses in National Cinemas/Filmmakers (Category I) or Themes/Genres/Theory (Category II)

 

Additional Conditions/Requirements for Major:

• Students must maintain a C average or above in all major courses.

• No more than three courses (9 credits) within the major can be taken for Satisfactory/Audit.

• Only one film internship (ENGFLM 1903 or A&S 1900) can be counted as part of the major.

• Writing (W) requirement: Students must complete at least one W-course in the major.
