Elfriede Fürsich

Elfriede Fürsich is a media scholar who specializes in issues of globalization, mobilities, journalism, popular culture and cultural diversity. She has investigated discourses of globalization in media ranging from travel programs and music reviews to business journalism and online news games.  She co-edited the book Travel Journalism: Exploring Production, Impact and Culture (2014) and published her research in leading Media and Cultural Studies journals such as Critical Studies in Media CommunicationBroadcasting and Electronic Media and Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly. In addition, she was selected to write an expert report on “Media and the Representations of Others” for the UNESCO World Report Investigating in Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue. Currently, she is on the editorial board of the academic journal Journalism Studies; previously, she served on the boards of International Journal of Cultural Studies and Popular Communication.

Before joining the University of Pittsburgh, she has taught in the US, India and Germany. She was tenured faculty at Boston College; was Visiting Faculty at University of Hyderabad, India; worked in Germany as BCP Visiting Professor of Media and Popular Culture at Freie Universität Berlin and as a Visiting Professor at University of Hamburg’s Erasmus Mundus M.A. Program in Journalism, Media and Globalization. In addition, she has also held classes at Hertie School of Governance in Berlin and Filmuniversität Babelsberg.

Fürsich also has earlier professional experience in working for print media, public relations and broadcasting, including for the German National Public Broadcaster ZDF.

Elfriede Fürsich is a Visiting Associate Professor in Communication and an Affiliate Faculty Member in Cultural Studies, Film and Media Studies, and the Global Studies Center
